Geography of the United Arab Emirates The United Arab Emirates (UAE) - a federation of seven independent states lying along the eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. The federation consists of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi (Abu Zabu), Ajman, Dubai, Al Rudzheyra, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain, officially united in 1971. The Emirates developed from several villages located on the banks Gulf emirate excluding El Fujairah, located on the shores of the Gulf of Oman. The capital of the United Arab Emirates is Abu Dhabi. However, Dubai, Sharjah, Ras al-Khaimah, Fujairah are also independent capitals of each emirate. The United Arab Emirates occupied territory in the north-eastern end of the Arabian Peninsula. In the north, the country has a common border with Qatar in the west and south - with Saudi Arabia, in the east - the Sultanate of Oman. On the north the country is surrounded by the Persian Gulf, in the east by Gulf of Oman. The total area of the UAE is 83.6 thousand sq. m. km. The length of the coastline along the Persian Gulf - 500 km along the Omani-75 km. It is located opposite the north coast of Iran through the Persian Gulf, while Qatar - only 50 km to the northwest. The UAE consists of seven emirates - Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain. Together, these emirates occupy a territory roughly the same size as Portugal.
